Ada Garden Hotel
Okinawa, Japan
Hotel / Inn

The ideal base to search for many of the specialty bird species of Okinawa Island. Our very comfortable and clean hotel is just 2 hours from Naha airport and right in the heart of the last remaining wilderness on the island.
The nearby Yanbaru National Park contains some of the last surviving tracts of subtropical rainforest in Japan. The park is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and protects many rare and endangered species.
Of these species the Okinawa Rail (Gallirallus okinawae) is the most famous and is entirely endemic to the northern section of the island. Because of its small population and restricted range it is considered endangered. It is a flightless Rail with striking black-and-white plumage and a bright red beak and legs.
Its distinctive call can be heard right outside our hotel, but it is a shy bird that can easily elude detection.
There are many other threatened species on the IUCN Red List and 177 feature on the Red List of the Ministry of the Environment. Some of these species include Okinawa Woodpecker, Amami Woodcock, Ryukyu Black-breasted Leaf Turtle, Anderson’s Crocodile Newt, Ishikawa’s Frog, Holst’s Frog, Namiye’s Frog, Ryukyu Long-tailed Giant Rat and Muennink’s Spiny Rat. All these species are classified as endangered; And the Muennink’s Spiny Rat, the Okinawa Woodpecker, and Yanbaru Whiskered Bat being critically endangered.
We are very aware of the importance of the wildlife in our area and are proud to host anyone with an interest in seeing these special creatures.
We welcome you to the home of the Okinawa Rail.
