Huerte Grande

Strait of Gibraltar, Spain

Hotel Hotel / Inn

Huerta Grande is a Rural Eco-Resort situated in the hills above the Strait of Gibraltar, between the Parque Natural del Estrecho (Natural Park of the Strait of Gibraltar) and the Parque Natural de los Alcornocales (Natural Park of Cork Oaks). The 7 hectares of Huerta Grande are nestled within a forest of Laurel and Cork Oak trees. Here our visitors find the silence and peace of pure nature. Huerta Grande is the perfect spot for nature lovers, especially bird lovers, who can witness from the resort the spectacular migrations in spring and autumn.

Our 7 acres are nestled in a narrow gorge canuto that carries the sound of fresh water throughout the grounds. These canutos conserve a sub-tropical habitat unique in Europe: a dense foliage of rhododendron, laurel, ash, birch, oak, and even a rare species of carnivorous plants. Huerta Grande is a little way inland, roughly halfway between Gibraltar and Tarifa. During the bird migration months you will struggle to leave the Huerta Grande car park as raptors fly past. You can spot black kites, honey buzzards, Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures, and with a little bit of luck, the magnificent Ruppell´s Vulture. At night, sitting in the café terrace, you will be captivated by the Beater call as it crosses the Strait.

Los Alcornocales is the last remaining Cork Oak forest in Europe, undoubtedly one of the jewels of Spain’s many protected nature reserves. It is Europe’s largest continuous woodland area and coincidentally the largest oak forest on our planet. Due to the density of the woodland, the proximity of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea and the height of the Sierras, this nature reserve benefits from its own microclimate.

El Parque Natural del Estrecho is situated on the coast and is privy to a constant flow of species between the two continents. This space plays a key role in the migration of birds and marine life.
