Miyakejima Island, Honshu-Japan
Hotel / Inn
The Miyakejima Hotel is an obvious orange building just five minutes from Sabigahama ferry port. Access to the island is either by plane on a limited number of flights per day to/from Haneda Airport, Tokyo or by ferry which runs everyday leaving Tokyo at 22.30 and arriving Miyakejima at 05.00 the next day. The closest birding site is Tairoike where a crater lake surrounded by forest with a few trails will produce most of the sought after species of this island.
Tairoike is the main place to visit just a short drive from the hotel. This volcanic crater lake and woodlands support sought after species such as Izu Thrush and during April – June Ijima’s Leaf Warbler.
Akakokko -kan nature centre is located near Tairoike and offers information on the birds and nature of the island.
The nature centre also offers organized nature tours and conducts surveys and research work across the island.es.
Inside the building it is possible to view a small pool where birds come to bathe.
There are many localized subspecies of birds here and the Owston’s Tit has recently become a full species and is endemic to just a couple of the Izu islands including Miyakejima.
Many people visit the island to go fishing and during the summer months it may be possible to take a small boat in search of the rare Japanese Murrelet.
The ferry to and from Miyakejima is a great platform to look for seabirds and albatrosses’ including the rare Short-tailed Albatross.
A visit to The Miyakejima Hotel provides the perfect base to explore this wonderful island and see its unique wildlife.
