From Mombacho’s Lakefront to softly rolling Pacific slopes, enjoy some of the best birdwatching in Nicaragua. Our beautifully positioned hacienda sits on a hill provided fantastic views over the surrounding La Calera Private Reserve and out to Lake Nicaragua. With our sustainable growing of Coffee, Cacao and fruits set amounts some of the finest tropical forest and close to the famous Mombacha Volcano this reserve has it all and welcomes those that want peace and tranquility and to see some of our country’s wonderful nature.
Just a short distance from Granada you can immerse yourself in nature. Wake up to the call of Howler Monkeys, observe countless bird species as well as butterflies, dragonflies and flowers. The La Calera Private Reserve protects a fabulous area of pristine forest that holds numerous flora and fauna. Trails set out through woodland and forest get you close to superb species such as the Long-tailed and White-ruffed Manakin or even the White-whiskered Puffbird. If you are lucky you could spot either Great Curassow or Crested Guan, up to 4 species of woodpecker and 9 species of woodcreeper. Check out the flowering bushes and trees as we have recorded 15 species of hummingbird in the property including Purple-throated Mountain-Gem, Blue-throated Goldentail, Magnificent Hummingbird and Violet-crowned Woodnymph.
La Calera is working with nature and its sustainability is due to the Coffee, Cacoa, Banana’s, Orange’s and Citris that are grown here.
Simply watching from the magnificent views overlooking the forest one can see raptors including Bicolored Hawk, Zone-tailed Hawk, Gray-headed Kite, Short-tailed Hawk, Gray Hawk and in migration time the stunning Swallow-
tailed Kite. At night the Common Potoo can be heard along with 7 species of owl including Black-and-white Owl and Spectacled Owl, while Pacific Screech-Owl lives right around the Hacienda. A night walk with a spotlight gives the chance to spot many different types of nocturnal mammals including Kinkajou, Four-eyed Opossum and Spotted Skunk.
In the drier areas it can be possible to see a whole range of different species including Lesser Ground Cuckoo plus many species of butterfly and reptiles.
We have hot thermal pools down near the lake and this area provides great opportunities to see waterbirds and a wide variety of dragonflies.
Kayaks can be used to drift slowly around our beautiful pond and thermal river and for those interested we can arrange boat trips to go in search of more interesting species around the lake edge.
