Umbrellabird Lodge

Buenaventura Reserve, Ecuador

Lodge Lodge

This wonderful and accessible lodge is located in the lower part of the Buenaventura Reserve, 500 m high. It has a rest area near feeders for Hummingbirds, Chachalacas and Tanagers, so it will make your stay a wonderful experience, you can also watch Coati’s roaming the area.

It has five pleasing cabins with private bathroom, ideal for housing up to 14 people, along with an open restaurant where you will enjoy watching hummingbirds zooming in and out of feeders, and chachalacas and tanagers feeding at fruit while sipping a coffee, or simply relax reading some of our reference books while coatis roam around the area.

The Lodge is settled in the lower portion of Buenaventura Reserve, at 500 m elevation. This reserve is home of a remarkable set of flora and fauna, including almost 300 bird species, many of them being endemics. Special climate conditions have resulted in a wide variety of habitats used by birds.

We also offer spectacular trails like:

Umbrellabird Trail. Duration: 1.5 hours. Distance: 2 km. Altitude: 500-600 m. Difficulty level: moderate. This trail has cobbled ground and safety handrails, but is only marked up to the Long-wattled Umbrellabird lek (its courtship display arena).

Scenic Route. Duration: 4 hours. Distance: 7 km. Altitude: 400-950 m. Difficulty level: moderate. An open and well-maintained cobbled trail that used to be part of the old Machala-Piñas road. It traverses the Reserve and provides easy observation of the diverse flora and fauna of the area, as well as the variation in altitudinal ecological zones. Else, birdwatching opportunities abound as birds sing and fly across the trail throughout the whole journey. This route is one of the road accesses to the Lodge, connecting the Virgin Mary shrine with the Umbrellabird Lodge. It is also ideal for trekking and mountain biking.
Parakeet Trail . Duration: 1.5 horas. Distance: 1 km. Altitude: 850 m. Difficulty level: moderate. A well-maintained trail with cobbled ground and safety handrails. It offers a panoramic view of the Reserve and Cerro Buenaventura.
